The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress handed out its Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year. There was $50,000 in scholarships handed out.

The alliance awarded a general scholarship to Kara Sosinski of Hudson, Ohio, daughter of Kurt Sosinski, director of product management for Tremco Inc. in Beachwood, Ohio.

Individuals or companies that commit a minimum of $100,000 to the scholarship fund can have a scholarship named after them and participate in the recipient selection process each year.

The Fred Good Scholarship was awarded to Carter Hruby of Fargo, N.D., son of Bill Hruby, the service manager with M.J. Dalsin Co. of West Fargo, N.D. A Dan Cohen Scholarship was awarded to Jonathan Poore of Harrogate, Tenn., son of Troy Poore, territory sales manager for LaFerney Commercial Roofing in Kingsport, Tenn.

In addition, the alliance renewed seven Melvin Kruger endowed scholarships for the 2012-2013 school year. The recipients include Gabriella Abbondanza of Southwick, Mass., who is attending Suffolk University in Boston; Alexis Belote of Red Oak, Texas, who is attending University of Texas in Austin; Sean Cawley of Birmingham, Ala., who is attending Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.; Neil Hourahan of Saunderstown, R.I., who is attending the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass,; and Charanya Kaushik of McMurray, Pa., who is attending Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa.

Joseph Baker of Apex, N.C., who is attending North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C., and Alexis Plachecki of Taylor, Wis., attending the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, are the Firestone Scholarship award recipients.

Each recipient will receive a $5,000 award. Awards are renewable for up to three years of undergraduate study or until a bachelor’s degree is earned provided recipients renew annually and maintain a 3.0 grade-point average.
