Jason Calverley typically spends the day helping his brother Anthony run Calverley Supply Co. in Sterling Heights, Mich. The two have owned the Luxaire dealership since 1974.

But last fall, Calverley found himself sitting in the broadcast booth of WDVD, a Detroit radio station, helping raise $22,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan.

Calverley Supply sponsored the 6 p.m. peak-time hour of the 12-hour 96.3 WDVD “Day of Wishes” radio-thon. Between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., “wish kids” and their families visited the station’s studios and shared their stories on air with radio personalities and guests including Detroit Red Wings Coach Mike Babcock and Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh.

Throughout the day, participants encouraged listeners to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation by contributing money or placing bids as part of an online auction on the radio station’s website.

Calverley was first exposed to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2003 when Luxaire, as part of its ongoing sponsorship of the foundation, presented the distributor with the opportunity to host a party for a child who had recently traveled to the central Florida theme parks.

“It was a great experience for all of us,” said Calverley. “So when we have the opportunity to participate in other events like this radiothon, we are always more than happy to do so.”

Luxaire’s sponsorship of the Make-A-Wish Foundation began in 2001 and has resulted in donations totaling more than $2 million. The most recent agreement between the two organizations extends the relationship into 2011 and commits $675,000 in Luxaire contributions over three years to the national program. During that time, Calverley Supply and its independent dealers, through the sale of Luxaire products, have funded five wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Calverley had the opportunity to meet one of those children, Izabel, through his company’s participation in the 2010 radiothon.

“Six-year-old Izabel and her family joined me in the studio, and I listened as her mother spoke on air about the positive impact that the Make-A-Wish Foundation has had upon her family and, most importantly, upon Izabel,” he said. “It went beyond a trip to Florida to include all the emotional support and inspiration that the organization and the people who contribute to it provide.”

In addition to the money that Calverley helped raise during his company’s one-hour sponsorship, Calverley Supply donated $2,000 to the event.

“We fully support what this organization does for Izabel and families like hers all around the country,” he said. “I appreciate the opportunity to hear their stories and help spread the word about the Make-A-Wish Foundation. At the same time, I’m proud to work with a company like Luxaire that provides a way for distributors and dealers to support the foundation through the sale of products. It’s an arrangement that helps set our dealers apart from their competitors and offer something extra to their customers - something that can lift everyone’s spirits.”
