Robert Dietz, the association’s chief economist, said the building industry should be strong in 2017.

However, for the year overall, the trend is positive, said NAHB Chairman Ed Brady, a home builder from Bloomington, Illinois.

The numbers are the results of a survey of National Association of Home Builders members on the state of current single-family home sales.

The small decline is not a reason for worry, said NAHB chief economist Robert Dietz.

The survey uses a 100-point scale to gauge builders’ perceptions of the current market, asking them to rate it from good to poor.

Single-family production increased 7.2 percent to 822,000 units — its highest level since November 2007. 

David Crowe, the NAHB’s chief economist, said the drop was likely a small correction.

There were an estimated 225,000 homes for sale in September, which represents a 5.8-month supply at current levels, NAHB said. 

 The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index for September reached its highest level since 2005.
