If you’ve never heard of Zappos.com, you need to. The online retailer was founded by Nick Swinmurn in 1999. Swinmurn found that when he went shopping for shoes it was always the same experience. One store might have the style he was looking for but not the right size. The next retailer had his size, but the wrong style. It’s a scenario many people can relate to. So Swinmurn decided to develop an online retail store that would have the right size and style of shoe for every customer. Zappos.com was born.

Since then, Zappos.com has teamed up with Amazon.com, and has become a very profitable online retailer. But it’s more than just its connection with Amazon that has made the company a success. It’s the Zappos core values that keep the company’s employees motivated and customers coming back for more.  The core values have made the company such a success that the company CEO wrote a book titled “Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose.”

There are ten Zappos.com core values. Here are some of my favorite.

Deliver wow through service. According to Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh, wowing the customer creates loyalty and return visits. For example, customers never pay shipping fees. Even if a customer needs to return a product, the shipping is covered both ways. A customer can even buy 10 pairs of shoes, try them on in their home, and return the nine they don’t want for no charge. He even explained that sometimes the company will secretly upgrade customers to overnight shipping. In some cases, customers have ordered shoes at midnight and received them eight hours later.

Create fun and a little weirdness. This core value means not only allowing people to have fun in the workplace, but realizing that employees are different. Encouraging these differences, or “weirdness,” in turn encourages employees to think outside the box. When employees think outside the box it helps the entire company look at inventive ways to grow and build profits.

Build a positive team and family spirit. Employees are more productive when they are happy and enjoy coming to work. It’s seems like such a simple core value, but there are many companies that put the feelings of employees last. Just get the job done and move on to the next. If you get along with your boss, if you have friends in the sheet metal shop, you’ll enjoy coming into work each day. And this makes employees more productivity and willing to see the business succeed. All you need to do is foster a work environment that values positivity and relationships.

All 10 of the Zappos.com core values can be adopted to any company, even sheet metal and HVAC companies. It’s easy to forget that successful sheet metal companies are more than just the ones that have all the technical know-how. They are also the shops that look after customers and employees. If you have your customers and your employees on your side, you can’t fail.

I encourage you to find out more about the Zappos core values by going here . Maybe you’ll adopt some of their values. Or maybe Zappos will inspire you to come up with core values you can adopt at your company.
