In response to growing coronavirus infections in the area and dwindling hospital space, the project had to be fast-tracked while PJ Mechanical remained on time and under budget. Constructed on the campus of SUNY College at Old Westbury in Long Island, the project took more than 100 design professionals and 30 subcontractors.

“We selected rectangular duct for this installation,” he shares. The reason we chose that was just the simplicity of construction, and the design lends itself well to that.”

Commissioned by FEMA, the facility includes 1,024 beds. The alternative care facility also includes nurses stations with hand washing sinks, temporary bathrooms and temporary shower facilities, portable laundry facilities, portable medical gas facilities, ice machines, portable medical waste facilities and new mechanical and electrical infrastructure to support all of the patient care facilities.

“Because of our robust onsite safety protocols, our entire workforce avoided COVID infections,” says design firm AECOM about the project, serving as design builder on construction. PJ Mechanical served as HVAC installer and Delta Sheet Metal, a subsidiary of PJ, fabricated the ductwork.
