A landmark bourbon distillery in Kentucky has metal roof and wall panels that helped contribute to the facility’s gold-level sustainability rating.

The Jim Beam American Stillhouse and Distillery in Clermont uses more than 31,000 square feet of products from Metal Sales Manufacturing Corp.

“The metal wall and roof panels gave us the look we wanted for the still house,” said Clark Barnette of Barnette Bagely Architects. “There are several traditional rick houses on the property and the corrugated panels allowed us to match the existing buildings.”

To earn the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold award from the U.S. Green Building Council, the project recycled 25 percent of building materials and kept more than 80 percent of the construction materials out of landfills. Other green features include occupancy sensors and control panels with lighting timers to save energy. Low-flow water fixtures reduce water usage by half.

“Metal roof and wall panels are great building materials,” Barnette said. “They offer supreme durability, a unique look and are sustainable thanks to their recyclability.”

The still house exterior features 11,800 square feet of 22-gauge, 7/8-inch corrugated Energy Star-listed wall panels in Old Zinc Grey with custom-painted Jim Beam logos. The roof has more than 7,500 square feet of 22-gauge, 16-inch striated vertical seam roof panels in Slate Grey and Matte Black. All panels feature a Kynar 500 color finish.

The panels, designed to reduce the HVAC load, are expected to last 50 years, are fully recyclable and contain a high percentage of recycled material — all of which helped earn LEED points.

“Metal Sales has been a great partner over the years,” says Larry Davis, estimator at JC Industries Inc., the metal panel installer. “On every project, they’ve provided engineering and technical support. Not to mention, their quick delivery and short lead times cater to tight deadlines.”
