HVAC students from California, Georgia and Michigan are the winners of this year’s Hilmor Retool Your Future scholarship contest.

Winners received a $10,000 scholarship, an HVACR starter kit and a trip to the 2014 AHR Expo in New York City. Hilmor also donated merchandise to the winners’ schools.

The winners include:

Kenneth Chavez, 46, a student at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif. Chavez has 20 years of experience in the medical field but found himself without a job. He chose to change careers and enter the HVAC industry and eventually start his own company.

David Hall, 33, attends Athens Technical College in Athens, Ga. Hall is one of a few people from his family to graduate from high school. He is the father of two boys, and his wife was expected to give birth to their third child, a girl, in April. He previously worked as a truck driver.

Francisco Iniguez, 23, is a student at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. Iniguez was born in California and raised in Mexico. He plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in addition to his HVAC certification. He is treasurer of his school’s Mechanical Service Contractors of America chapter, and participates in a program that repairs furnaces for elderly people in need.

“We know we are addressing an unmet need for financial assistance and other support for HVACR students,” said Andrea Halpin, Hilmor’s senior manager of brand marketing. “We are already planning the 2014 contest and will expand the number of scholarships to reach more students.”
