Thanks in part to a donation from HVAC manufacturer Luxaire, a Kansas child with a rare cancer had a chance to visit Hawaii and safely swim with sharks.
In March 2013, the Kansas chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a charity that works to fulfill the desires of children with life-threatening illnesses, sent a teen with a rare cancer to the nation’s 50th state. Kalab — for privacy reasons, Make-A-Wish does not disclose last names — and his family was flown to Hawaii, where they were greeted with the traditional Hawaiian leis and spent seven days visiting Pearl Harbor, attending a luau and deep-sea fishing.
The highlight of the trip, according to Kaleb, was when he and his parents and one of his sisters climbed into a cage where they could watch as sharks swarmed and swam to the cage.
“(It was) the coolest thing,” Kaleb said.
Luxaire, part of Johnson Controls, is a major sponsor of Make-A-Wish in Kansas and nationwide.
