The Redding School of Arts in Redding, Calif., uses more than 67,000 square feet of metal wall and roof panels from Metal Sales Manufacturing Corp.

The K-8 charter school, the first new school campus in the world to receive platinum-level certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, is expected to be net-zero facility, officials say. That means it will use no more energy than what it creates. The school was designed to provide a fun, creative learning environment for students and also to display the importance of sustainability to students, teachers and parents.

“We were looking for metal panels with recycled content, durability and an energy-friendly SRI (solar reflective index) value,” said James Theimer, a principal at Trilogy Architecture. “Redding School of the Arts has been designed to last for 100 years. With Metal Sales’ wall and roof panels, I think we found a product that would live up to that challenge.”

The facility’s newly sustainable design uses panels that are all Energy Star compliant. The color panels, which improve energy efficiency and improve the amount of energy needed for cooling, also have a long lifespan, are 100 percent recyclable, and contain a high percentage of recycled material.

“Once again, everyone at Metal Sales has gone above and beyond to provide excellent customer service and technical support,” said Matt Ludlow, project manager at Kodiak Roofing, which served as installer. And because they have many locations throughout the country, we benefitted from LEED regional points and reduced lead times.”
