The Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute cheered the U.S. Senate’s passage of a bill Monday that it says provides regulatory relief for makers of water heaters; small-duct, high-velocity equipment; and some commercial refrigerators.

The AHRI said a last-minute compromise between Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Sen. Jeff Bigaman (D-N.M.) and Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) prevented the legislation’s defeat.

“We are grateful to Chairman Bingaman for his incredible efforts to pass this legislation before the end of the legislative session,” said AHRI President and CEO Stephen Yurek. “The cooperation between Sens. Bingaman and Portman is an example for their colleagues in the House. We look forward to working with House sponsors to expeditiously pass the Enabling Energy Saving Innovations Act and get it signed into law.”

The AHRI represents most of the major North American manufacturers of HVAC equipment.
