Chicago-based contractor Emcor Services Team Mechanical recently installed the HVAC system and solar wall at a Grainger’s 1 million square-foot distribution center.

The 2,700-square-foot wall pre-heats the outside air before it comes in contact with the rooftop HVAC unit serving two storage rooms. The air is regulated through dampers tied into a building automation system, which switches from pre-heated to ambient air based on temperatures.

Emcor also performed all of the project’s commissioning work. They expect the facility to qualify for a gold rating under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building rating program.

“Our client has calculated that the solar wall will pay for itself in less than 10 years,” said Emcor division President Robert Doessel.
