Thermostat Recycling Corp. recently collected its millionth mercury-using thermostat. In the last decade, the group’s efforts have kept almost 5 tons of mercury out of landfills, officials said.

“TRC is pleased to report that it reached an important milestone having now recovered over 1 million thermostats,” said Mark Tibbetts, the group’s executive director. “This was accomplished in large part due to the efforts of contractors and HVAC supply houses that voluntarily collect waste thermostats on TRC’s behalf. We look forward to their continuing participation in the program.”

Thermostat Recycling Corp. was founded in 1998 by Honeywell, White-Rodgers and General Electric and now represents 30 one-time manufacturers of mercury-using thermostats. The program, active in 47 states, allows HVAC contractors and homeowners a free way to safely dispose of thermostats through participating wholesalers, retailers and municipal collection centers.
