The president of metal roofing maker Atas International had lunch with Barack Obama Dec. 4, 2009.

Dick Bus met the president when he visited Allentown, Pa., as part of a “main street tour” to see how local businesses and residents are faring in this recession. Allentown’s 9.4 percent unemployment rate is close to the national average.

Obama spoke at Lehigh Carbon Community College and ate with Bus at Hamilton Family Restaurant, a diner called “Ham Fam” by area residents.

“I told the president that if he can continue to support sustainable building products, both for commercial and residential applications, it would be a good way to fuel the economy,” Bus said. “I also mentioned that the metal from the Cash for Clunkers program should be recycled so homeowners can then use the recycled metal for a new metal roof. Such a roof would last for 50 years while being more energy-efficient, saving the homeowner money and creating more jobs.”

The experience of meeting the nation’s commander in chief was incredible, Bus said.

“The entire day was thrilling for Allentown and people within Lehigh Valley, but to be chosen as one of five people to have lunch with the president is an honor that I will never forget.”
