The Mechanical Service Contractors of America
has introduced the GreenStar certification program recognizing MSCA Star
contractors who have shown commitment to environmental stewardship.
MSCA
GreenStar, recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council, is available only to
MSCA Star contractors committed to promoting environmentally conscious
services.
In order to attain GreenStar status, contractors
must demonstrate they have the proven skills and expertise necessary to deliver
energy-efficient and cost-effective indoor environmental solutions to meet
customer needs and ensure tenant health, safety and satisfaction.
At
the MSCA Star Summit May 13-14 in Chicago, where the GreenStar announcement was
made, Linda Sorrento, director of education and research partnerships with the
USGBC thanked the organization for being the first contractor group to establish
this type of program.
“You are truly the leaders in this
movement,” she said. “We know your educational programs are top notch, so this
is a most appropriate partnership.”
To become an MSCA
GreenStar, an MSCA Star contractor must employ at least one Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design-accredited professional and be a member of
either the local or national USGBC.
Companies must also
verify that at least 25 percent of their total employees have participated in a
green training or education program and demonstrate that they promote
environmental responsibility by offering sustainable services and recommending
green procedures and equipment.
Contractors must also
establish an internal commitment by attaining LEED certification for their
building or by developing an internal “green policy.” They also must have
participated as part of a project team with an existing LEED building or LEED
new-construction registered project within the past three years
“The building and facility marketplace is looking for new and
innovative ways to use eco-friendly products and solutions,” said Russ Borst,
chairman of the MSCA board of managers. “Our GreenStar certification allows
MSCA Star contractors to help meet the needs of their customers, while
providing continuing best-in-class service, support and value.”
