Midea Air-Conditioning Equipment Co., EWC Controls, Smardt Inc. and Haier American Trading are the four newest members of the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute.

GM Midea Air-Conditioning Equipment Co. in the Shunde district of China is one of the largest Chinese manufacturers and exporters of air-conditioning equipment, ARI said. It produces a full line of air-conditioning equipment for the residential and commercial market.

"With the addition of Midea as an ARI member, we now have nearly a dozen companies based outside North America," said ARI President William G. Sutton. "Increased participation in the association by international manufacturers strengthens our global voice on energy efficiency and environmental issues, which benefits our entire membership."

Smardt Inc. in Montreal was established to maximize the chiller operating efficiency of the Turbocor oil-free compressor technology. The company manufactures water-cooled chillers and compact modular chiller components.

EWC Controls in English Town, N.J., was established in 1961 as a manufacturing company of power transformers for military and commercial use.

Haier American founded in 1999 and based in New York City, is the U.S. sales and marketing division of the international Haier Group based in China. Haier manufactures indoor comfort systems, as well as numerous major appliances and electronics.
