DETROIT - The International Training Institute (ITI) hosts its annual Apprentice Contest for the first time in Detroit in May.

Snips was able to visit a regional portion of the contest held in Flint, Mich. in March. Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA) Local 7 hosted the event at its training facility, attracting contestants from Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia, Locals 24, 33, 45, 80 and 292. There were 45 contestants in all. Training director Steve Murzen, Local 80, said it will be an honor for Detroit to host the national contest. Of the regional, he said, "It's a good experience for these kids." ITI is a joint labor management program of SMACNA and SMWIA.
