Contractor launches safety, recruitment program
ST. LOUIS - C&R Mechanical Co. and the Mechanical Contractors Association of Eastern Missouri brought engineering safety and recruitment programs to St. Louis high schools throughout the month of February.
To coincide with Engineers Week, an engineering-safety program was presented Feb. 18 at Hazelwood East High School. Engineering-safety presentations were also presented to students at Hazelwood West and Hazelwood Central high schools.
"Besides the core theme of safety, we are also interested in delivering the message that engineering is not just for boys," said C&R engineer Melissa Russo, a 1976 Hazelwood East graduate and one of the presenters.
According to the National Society of Professional Engineers, which sponsors Engineers Week, women comprise only 10 percent of all engineers in the United States. To spur greater career-interest among women, the society singled out Feb. 24 as "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day." The female-recruitment program, which aims to boost interest in math and science among girls, was launched in 2001 by NSPE with the Society of Women Engineers.
