January U.S. machine tool consumption totaled $149.63 million, according to the Association for Manufacturing Technology and the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTC program, was down 7.8% from December and down 40.4% from the total of $251 million reported for January 2001. However, association officials are optimistic that a new economic stimulus package that includes the expensing of 30% of equipment purchases will turn this around.
