According to HVAC Ductwork: Issues, Answers and Practical Considerations published by the CertainTeed Corp. in its Professional Education Series, "It is imperative that all hvac specifications require a post-installation inspection that is specifically generated for the type(s) of system installed."
This course is intended to provide professionals who design hvac systems with a review of the types of insulated ductwork available for air distribution systems, along with insight on other aspects of duct design and installation. It is designed especially for architects, building designers, inspectors, builders, contractors and engineers who must qualify for continuing professional education credit.
Regarding ductwork inspection, "¿ uninsulated sheet metal, wrapped and lined sheet metal, and fiber glass ductwork must be examined closely for installation requirements specific to the materials as well as for requirements common to all hvac systems.
"For example, this typical NAIMA installation spec addresses adhesives and fasteners: 'fiber glass duct liner is adhered to sheet metal with 90% (minimum) coverage of adhesives complying with ASTM C 916, plus mechanical fasteners (either impact-driven or weld-secured) so the interior of the duct or plenum is completely insulated, with all joints neatly and tightly butted and with no interruption or gaps. Mechanical fastener spacing is in accordance with SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards, 2nd Edition."
