LAS VEGAS - David Shapiro of Silver Spring, Md., won the Trane-PHCC HVAC Contractor of the Year award at the annual convention of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors National Association.

Shapiro is founder of Shapiro & Duncan Inc., a mechanical-contracting company in Rockville, Md. While his two sons run the business, Shapiro works with eight vocational-technical schools and two night training centers in the Washington, D.C., area.

Shapiro is known for his development of hands-on displays of HVAC and plumbing systems at construction shows at the National Building Museum, trade shows, shows at area schools, community colleges and engineering colleges, award officials said.

Ron Newman, last year's HVAC contractor of the year, presented a $2,500 check and trophy to Shapiro at an awards banquet.

There also were three runners-up who will receive $500 from Trane: Tony Robertson of Pettus Mechanical Services in Muscle Shoals, Ala.; James Murphy of Murphy Co. in St. Louis; and David Dugger of Kaltoff Inc.in Knoxville, Tenn.
