Buildings act would reduce depreciation on HVAC mechanical equipment from 39 years to 20 years.

CHANTILLY, Va. - In a letter to the U.S. House of Representatives, the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association urged legislators to support the Cool and Efficient Buildings Act.

The act has the support of other industry associations, including the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute and the Air Conditioning Contractors of America.

The bill would amend the Internal Revenue Service code to reduce the depreciation period for energy-efficient HVAC mechanical equipment to 20 years from the current 39-year period.

SMACNA has continually urged Congress to support and enact into law an aggressive federal tax incentive policy that encourages greater energy efficiency in both commercial and public buildings. According to the association, the current act would create incentives for commercial building owners to upgrade their HVAC systems. It would also encourage building owners to retrofit their properties with chlorofluorocarbon-free technology.
