M.S. Johnston Inc. recognized as longest-tenured York dealer.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - M.S. Johnston Co. Inc. in Hagerstown, Md., recently celebrated 64 years as a dealer for York International Corp. York recognized the family-owned business as its longest-tenured dealer in the world.

M.S. Johnston, which has approximately 50 employees, started as a household refrigeration service business in the basement of founder Maurice S. Johnston's home in 1932. In 1940, the company signed up with York Ice Machinery Corp. as what was then referred to as a "contracting distributor." In addition to selling refrigerator-condensing units, M.S. Johnston began selling 3- and 5-ton water-cooled air-conditioning units to taverns, restaurants and department stores.

By the 1950s, the company changed from a York contracting distributor to a York dealer, and Aircon Engineering of Cumberland, Md., became its distributor.

"Doing business with York is like family," said M.F. Johnston, current president and owner of the company. "The main reason we continue (to be a York dealer) are the people and those who represent them.
