If I had to pick a favorite sport, it would be baseball. A lot of it has to do with growing up with a father that never missed a Yankee game on TV or on the radio. Now I have another reason. Major League Baseball is on a quest to become one of the ‘greenest’ and most energy efficient U.S. sports.

Today I read a fascinating article at TriplePundit.com. According to the article, MLB commissioner Bud Selig said that baseball, as a social institution, needs to be at the forefront of issues that impact the country. One of those issues includes environmental practices that help protect future generations. That is why several MLB stadiums have achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.

Are you a fan of the Kansas City Royals or maybe the Milwaukee Brewers? How about the San Diego Padres or the Seattle Mariners? If so, your team has a LEED certification. Most of the stadiums are also using solar panels to help control energy costs.

As a San Francisco resident, I’m proud to say that the San Francisco Giants were one of the first MLB teams to earn a LEED certification. AT&T Park earned a silver certification for existing buildings from the United States Green Building Council.

I don’t get a chance to see too many Giants games, but when I do I’m always reminded that my team is scoring more than just homeruns on the field. AT&T Park definitely scores when it comes to energy efficiency and being a great steward of the environment.
