Warranty company American Home Shield’s new advertising campaign tries to explain the difference between homeowners insurance and home warranties.

Many people don’t know that homeowners insurance typically doesn’t cover things such as HVAC construction maintenance and replacement or new ductwork fabrication that may be needed with HVAC sales, the company said.

“Things like air conditioning systems, refrigerators, washers, dryers, and water heaters break down over time and when they do, repair or replacement costs can be expensive,” said Philipp von Holtzendorff-Fehling, chief marketing officer at American Home Shield. “These types of breakdowns due to normal wear and tear are things that homeowners insurance just doesn’t cover.”

American Home Shield President Mark Barry said it’s the difference between coverage for what could occur and what likely will occur.

“The campaign is designed to be entertaining but also communicate a very important message,” Barry said. “Most people have homeowners insurance to protect themselves against what ‘might happen,’ but too few have a home warranty to protect them against breakdowns that will happen.”
