In a move that is expected to create over 3,000 jobs, the Sears Tower in Chicago is going “green.” It is just another example, in my opinion, of how America’s economy will depend on energy-efficiency projects.

The Associated Press is reporting that the $350 million Sears Tower project will reduce electricity use by 80 percent and save 24 million gallons of water each year. The main features of the project will include the installation of solar panels, wind turbines and roof gardens. The solar panels will be used to heat water in the building. Improvements will also be made to the building’s windows and mechanical systems.

The AP is also reporting that the five-year project will include the construction of a 500-room hotel near the Sears Tower. The hotel will also have a number of its own green technologies.

It’s great to see that this iconic building from the 1970s is changing with the times. In fact, we need to see more buildings evolve. The United States is losing a lot of its manufacturing jobs, but the one thing that can’t be shipped over seas are “green jobs.” Green technology and sustainability is what is going to jump start our economy and put men and women back to work.
